Intake Process

What do I say on the phone?

The most intimidating part of getting help can sometimes be asking for help.  When you call Thumb Area Psychological Services, you will talk directly with our trained administration staff.  Your phone call is confidential.  We will ask you for your name, number, age, and a brief statement about why you would like services.  This will help us select the best therapist for you.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

The first appointment is called an intake appointment.  You will be asked to show up 15- 20 minutes prior to your appointment time.  This will allow you time to fill out intake paperwork. After you fill out the initial paperwork, you will meet with your therapist.  Your therapist will explain your rights, confidentiality, therapy styles, etc... The appointment generally lasts anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

For insurance purposes, we will need your driver's license or a photo ID and your physical insurance card.  We will take a photo copy for our records, which will be kept in a confidential file.

How long are appointments?

Each therapist conducts sessions a little differently depending on client availability, practice type, and client needs.  Generally an appointment will be scheduled from 45- 50 minutes.

What if I don't have insurance?

That is OKAY!  We have a Hardship Scale that you can discuss with our administrative staff.
